26th Feb 2021

Jilkminggan community146 kilometres south-east of Katherine and 193 kilometres north of Daly Waters has now been fully evacuated with residents safely transferred to temporary accommodation in Mataranka.

Commander Janelle Tonkin from Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services (NTPFES) said authorities were able to safely remove around 250 people from Jilkminggan and the evacuation showed how well the community can work together to make things happen.

Commander Tonkin said the Mataranka community was outstanding in their support to accommodate so many people at short notice and (NTPFES) thanked everyone for their efforts and support.

“Access to the community remains cut off and we ask that the public stay away until it has been declared safe. We are continuing to monitor the situation and will provide a further update in the morning.”
