According to Hearing Australia, ear disease and hearing loss are overrepresented among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children – and that worldwide 60% of childhood hearing loss is due to preventable causes. Selma Kum-Sing, the Senior Community Engagement Officer for the HAPEE Program with Hearing Australia, speaks with CAAMA Radio about the importance of ear health.

Ms Kum-Sing says, “For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, we’re overrepresented in this cohort, we see our children experiencing hearing loss at three times the rate of non-indigenous kids”.

However, Ms Kum-sing has noted a positive trend in the increased focus on personal hygiene due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has had a positive impact on ear health.
