Updated: 19/09/2018

A Warlpiri/Luritja/Anmatjere man who was lead actor in the internationally acclaimed film ‘Sweet Country’ has taken out the Best Performance Award at the Capricornia Film Awards in Darwin at the weekend.

Hamilton Japngarrdi Morris, from Nyirripi community, five hours north-east from Alice Springs, plays Sam Kelly in the film, and took out the Best Performance Award for his captivating portrayal in the Warrick Thornton masterpiece.

Speaking to CAAMA radio Mr Morris said it was a surprise to win the award and that he accepted it in honor of his ancestors who were treated poorly in the era that the film was set.

Mr Morris also shares his own challenges in recreating the painful story and says that many of the scenes he acted in were grimly difficult, particularly when his character is bound by chains.

The Capricornia Film Awards showcase the best films created in Australia's Tropical North or by Territorians, and are a part of the Darwin International Film festival which is currently underway in the Top End.

'Sweet Country'  took out The Best Feature Film Award.
