Do we need more education around our first nations flags?

And finally confused thieves in Melbourne’s North West have repeatedly stolen the Torres Strait Islander Flag amid rumours it is Arabic.

For 2 years Australia’s three national flags have been flown at the Malahang Reserve in Heidelberg West Park and during that short time the Torres Strait flag has been stolen a total of five times, twice in January alone.

Banyule Mayor Craig Langdon told CAAMA Radio he received an anonymous phone call from a woman who told him she thought the flag was Arabic

Mayor Langton says the situation indicates a lack of knowledge around Australia’s national flags, stating signage will now be implemented.

Bernard Namok junior a  broadcaster with the Top End Aboriginal Broadcasting Association whose father designed the flag shares the significance of the flag  which he says  is a part of his people’s identity.
