It is Lalin time, that is it is close to the time when the season changes around the Bardi culture, rain clouds are building, yellow flowers tell us that stingray is getting fat, and that turtles will be laying their eggs.

But right now it is Oondoorrd time: mating of the turtles and the Bardi families are waiting to catch their first ‘married turtle’.

For the Bardi people of the Dampier Peninsula north of Broome in the West Kimberley, it is a time of celebration and also friendly competition: as young men try to be the first to spear their first ‘married turtle’ – it is a rite of passage into being a good hunter of turtles.
