Before colonisation, my people had laws, they had ceremonial traditions, they had language and they had knowledge of customs and survival, social rules and kinship obligations. Nukunu Elder Lindsay Thomas.
One of the longest-running native title claims in the country recently ended when Justice Natalie Charlesworth delivered an emotional judgement on their right to land. In June 2019 at the Port Germein and Districts Hall the Federal Court recognised Nukunu native title over a large area around Port Pirie, 23 years after they lodged their claim. Last week the Nukunu people were also successfully recognised as the native title holders for a large area east of Port Augusta . Nukunu Elder Lindsay Thomas, the last living member of the original claimants, described the ruling ” a huge relief”.
