A new precinct called Ngurra will be constructed on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in the Parliamentary Triangle, on Ngunnawal country (Canberra).
It will house a new centre for the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSIS) and a new centre for learning and knowledge.
A national resting place to care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestral remains who cannot head home to country will also be established.
The new $316.5 million precinct was announced by the Federal Government earlier this year and would take its place among Australia’s Parliament, the National Gallery and the National Library.
Another announcement that is significant to the Territory has also been made by AIATSIS – an agreement to open an engagement and digitisation facility in Alice Springs.
It will mark the first time in its history that the AIATSIS will extend its operations to a base outside of the national capital.
Dunghutti man and the CEO of AIATSIS, Craig Ritchie, spoke to CAAMA’s Philippe Perez about the announcements.
