Yindijbarndi calling on Government to stop sacred sites from being destroyed

The Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation will call on the Federal Government to invoke emergency powers to stop development companies from destroying sacred sites.

Following ongoing conflict with Fortescue Metals Group…the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation says it will call on Tony Burke…the Federal Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities…. to use his power to put measures in place to ensure the appropriate people carry out heritage surveys of areas which are to be developed.

Yindjibarndi Aboriginal corporation CEO Michael Woodley told CAAMA Radio…over a 3 year period heritage surveys haven’t been done by the appropriate organisations and proper people…who have the knowledge to carry out such a survey.

He believes Aboriginal elders from the area in question should always be the people who survey those areas….and that they should be ones to advise the developers as to whether or not a project should go ahead…

Mr Woodley speaks to Nerida Currey on Strong Voices.
