Amnesty International in Australia to spotlight human rights issues

Salil Shetty, the Global Director of Amnesty International… one of the world’s peak human rights organisations… has travelled to Utopia in the NT to witness first-hand the effects that Government policies have had on the lives of Aboriginal people…and to shine a spotlight on the human rights issues of our country.

Mr Shetty and representatives from Amnesty International were in Alice Springs over the weekend.

Nerida Currey caught up with Sarah Marland, to hear Amnesty’s stance on a number of issues facing Aboriginal people in Australia.

Greens leader Bob Brown has called on the state and Federal Governments to put an urgent halt to the Brighton Bypass saying it is a national disgrace for Tasmania to be building a construction over a site of significant Aboriginal heritage.
Amnesty International says too little had been done in the 20 years since a Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody to improve the plight of the nation’s first people.
The Gillard Government is launching a new program which will help provide more support to vulnerable families across the Northern Territory.
