IMP Update…two deadly runners conquer 2012 Boston Marathon

Tegan Pigram from Derby WA and Jamie Wunungmurra from Yirrkala NT have overcome many hurdles to conquer the 2012 Boston Marathon…a 42.195 km course.

With a temperature of 31 degrees at the start line these two deadly athletes have made an outstanding achievement in completing the marathon…with Tegan finishing the course in 5 hours 14 minutes, and Jamie coming in at 6 hours 7 minutes.

This is an incredible example of the strength, spirit and determination…people say if you can run a marathon, you can achieve almost anything!

Tegan and Jamie will now continue to work through elements of their Certificate III in Community Recreation.

2012 IMP Squad Announced…

Rob de Castella and the Indigenous Marathon Project team have announced the 12 men and women who have been selected to be part of the IMP 2012 New York City Marathon squad.

After a nation-wide search with more than 130 applications and a massive screening process, the 2012 squad are:

The athletes will meet for the first time when they come together in Canberra this month for the first training camp…the first of a number of intensive training camps which will lead them a step closer to completing the world’s most famous foot race.

Tryouts for Indigenous Marathon Project TOMORROW in Alice Springs

Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Project has seen 15 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women from remote, regional and urban communities across the country run in the world’s most famous marathon… The New York City Marathon.

And now they are looking for young men and women to try out for the Marathon Project for 2012. Try-outs are happening right now across the country… including tomorrow, Tuesday the 20th of March 2012 in Alice Springs.

Nerida Currey spoke to Rob de Castella on Strong Voices to hear all about it.

Lions NAB Cup Round 2 team named for Alice Springs

The Brisbane Lions have named their unplaced list of 29 players for this weekend’s Round 2 NAB Cup clash against Adelaide in Alice Springs. The Lions will field a side which includes the likes of Matthew Leuenberger, Tom Rockliff, Jack Redden and Todd Banfield as they continue their build-up to the AFL premiership season opener on March 31.

Ruckman Billy Longer will also make the trip to Alice Springs after impressing in his debut hit out last week, alongside fellow top performers Claye Beams, Ryan Lester and Ash McGrath. With skipper Jonathan Brown absent from the side this week, there will be no shortage of players looking to step up in his absence, with young forwards Bryce Retzlaff, Aaron Cornelius and Jordan Lisle all named. ONLY A FEW DAYS LEFT TO APPLY FOR INDIGENOUS MARATHON PROJECT

Former world champion marathon runner Rob de Castella is calling on Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander men and women to consider competing in one of the biggest running events in the world…the New York City Marathon.

The Project…founded by Mr de Castella…annually selects a group of Indigenous men and women to compete in the New York City Marathon with just 6 months of training……and they are calling on men and women aged between 18 and 30 to take up the challenge and apply for this year’s Indigenous Marathon Project…

Applications for 2012 close next Monday, the 13th February, so make sure you apply or nominate NOW!!

Successful applicants will be coached and supervised by Mr de Castella, attend a number of training camps around Australia compete in fun-runs and running events… undertake a special Certificate III in Community Recreation with a focus in Indigenous Health…and compete in the world famous New York City Marathon.

Mr de Castella say he encourages everyone who is interested in distance running…and wants to be an inspiration, should apply.

New NT Thunder Coach Daniel Archer in Alice Springs

NT Thunder’s new Coach Daniel Archer is in Alice Springs this weekend…and has
had his first opportunity to check out the Central Australian football talent.
He attended the Southern Region squad training session yesterday (Friday).

CAAMA’s Nerida Currey had a chat to Daniel during the training session yesterday.

Thunder WIN Inaugual Grand Final!

Thunder took on Ainslie yesterday in Alice Springs, in what was the NEAFL Cross Conference Grand Final. Thunder defeated the Morningside Panthers last Sunday to claim their chance at becoming the Inaugural 2011 NEAFL Season Cross Conference Premiers, with Ainslie defeated the Sydney Swans Reservers.


TERRITORY Thunder won the inaugural NEAFL cross-conference grand final by defeating Canberra-based Ainslie by 22 points at Traeger Park. After a slow start, Thunder kicked into action midway through the second quarter after Ainslie forward Michael Lawless had put the visitors 24 points ahead. Continue reading

Former NRL Star Fullback David Peachey on CAAMA

NRL Round 22, which happened over the weekend was dedicated to Closing the Gap…the largest campaign to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health

For the third year in a row the National Rugby League have made round 22 Close the Gap Round, with an aim to highlight the need to focus on key issues including indigenous health, education, employment and life expectancy.

A number of events were staged to promote the Close the Gap Campaign within the Close the gap round, which ran from the 5th to the 8th of August, and  Indigenous  jerseys were worn by all players.

Former rugby league fullback David Peachey…who played most of his NRL career with the cronulla sutherland sharks…says he believes it is very important to be holding events and campaigns like the Close the Gap round event.

RICHMOND meet Mutitjulu Kids

On Saturday 28th May 2011, five Indigenous children from Mutitjulu School reaped rewards of a partnership between Dick Smith and Richmond Football Club, the ‘Technology in the Territory’ program. Tiger’s player Will Thursfield and Dick Smith National Operations Manager, Armando Pedruco, were on hand as the five lucky school children chose technology prizes from the Dick Smith Darwin store.
