The Federal and state governments are facing growing criticism for their failure to help address spiralling youth suicide rates in Aborignal communiites which in some cases are hundreds of times higher than those in the non indigenous sector.

An application by South australian Aboriginal elder Uncle Kevin Buzzacott to overturn a proposed expansion of the Olympic Dam uranium and copper mine in has been dismissed by the Federal court.

A major Australian health company says despite modern advances in health services the life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other Australians is proving difficult to overcome.

And a group of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people now qualified as financial counsellors have joined the fight to stop scams and rip offs in remote Aboriginal communities.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander social Justice commissioner has voiced his concerns about how Government intends to include Aboriginal people in any talks about changes to the proposed Stronger Futures legislation when sixty eight communities across the Territory have lost their governance structures with the amalgamation of the Shires.

The Territory Minister for Essential Services Rob Knight has announced funding for improved water supply in three Aboriginal communities across the Northern Territory.

A group of 21 Aboriginal nations in the northern Murray Darling Basin are demanding that all water licences be revoked and that the rivers’ water be dealt with from a base of Aboriginal sovereignty, dominion and ultimate title.

The Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association held the official opening of the John Macumba Media and Training Centre and the CAAMA Radio Mobile Broadcast Unit on Tuesday the 17th of April.

The Federal Government funding aims to deliver training and employment opportunities for Aboriginal people living in Western Sydney.

The co chair of Australia’s peak national representative body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders has questioned the Gillard labor governments commitment to engage and work with the new group at the level which had been originally intended.

The Australian Race Discrimination Commissioner says any positive aspects of the proposed Stronger Futures Legislation may not be realised unless Aboriginal people can take ownership of their problems and own the solutions.

The Australian Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Helen Szoke has again re iterated the Australian Human rights Commission concerns over the proposed Stronger futures legislation for aborignal people in the Northern Territory.

A study funded by the Northern Territory government has found that nearly half of the long grasses who took part in a recent survey drank at dangerous levels six or seven days of the week.

A Northern Territory Supreme Court judge has awarded an Aborignal man more than $100,000 in damages following an assault in custody after he had been unlawfully arrested and detained.

The Australian Government has announced that it will provide funding to support the northern Indigenous pastoral industry.

The CEO of the THARAWAL Local Aboriginal Land Council has sent a strongly worded letter to the state government after no one from the land council was officially invited to the declaration of Dharawal National Park.

A Sydney based Aboriginal academic has suggested that it might be better to relocate people from some remote communities to other areas where they can receive training and greater opportunities for employment.

The host of a popular AFL football television show says the arrival of Aboriginal footballers from remote communities to play at the top level of the game is a new frontier for many AFL clubs and they are still getting used to dealing with their new players.

Australia’s peak reconciliation body has recognised the passing of music legend Dr Jimmy Little and says he was a great friend to reconciliation and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Aboriginal people are also mourning the loss of Yinjibarndi Elder Ned Cheedy…who has sadly passed away at the age of 105.
