The Scientific Inquiry into Hydraulic Fracking visited Alice Springs last week to hold the final round of Public Hearings and Community Forums before it releases its Final report.
Currently in the Northern Territory there is a moratorium, or ban, on Fracking in the entire Northern Territory. The NT Government will be presented with the final report in March and will decide then on whether or not to lift to ban.
The hearing was attended by many concerned residents, organisations, local business owners and health professionals, all who overwhelmingly shared their opposition to Fracking.
One of the speakers at the Alice Springs Public Hearing was Ned Jampijinpa Hargraves. Mr Hargraves is a Warlpiri elder who lives in Yuendumu Community, 300kms north-west of Alice Springs and is employed as a cultural advisor and warlpiri-english translator. He has been working tirelessly to help his fellow countrymen understand the fracking industry and the potential threats it poses to living culture.
Here he is speaking with the inquiry panel at the Alice Springs Public hearing...
