A new school program which aims to improve understandings of first nations languages is being introduced in the Northern Territory’s leading university.
Charles Darwin University, CDU are currently offering scholarships during their January summer school in Sydney and in their July winter school in Darwin. Five spots are available for each course
The scholarships will be funded by a grant from the Federal Government’s Indigenous Languages & arts program.
The two-week workshops will include an introduction to Yolngu language and culture, a course on Gamilaraay and will also look at linguistics for first nations languages.
The scholarships cover the costs of travel, accommodation, food, course and materials.
CDU Senior Indigenous Studies Lecturer Greg Williams, says there is a lack of understanding in the importance of indigenous languages and that he hopes these workshops can change perceptions.
