Moves to change Australia Day voted down.

13th Feb 2017

A Western Australian Greens Senator remains confident that the move to change the date of Australia Day will continue to grow, despite their motion in the senate being voted down.

The Australian Greens motion in the Senate to change the date of Australia Day acknowledged Aboriginal and Torres strait Islanders as the first peoples of Australia  and that January 26th was a day of mourning because for many it represents the beginning of colonisation. The motion was voted down by both the Labor and Liberal parties and members of the cross bench.

Senator Siewert was critical of both the major political parties and stated she believes support for the change the date campaign will continue to grow.
