Local Support for the RIBS Radio Programs.

Legendary as some of the busiest shows broadcasting through CAAMA, ( Ntaria for example usually has over 20 requests per show) … with the phone often running red hot it’s important for the broadcaster, & the broadcast, that there is good support to help out and so the radio program can be as good as it can be …family plays a very big part in how this happens , so from Ltyentye Apurte to Elliot to from Utju to Alpurrurulam .. good family & friend support helps the RIBS Broadcasters do a really great job…

Aputula ….RIBS Coordinator/Trainer Visit

The last few days spent in Aputula was great … Jonathon McCormack is up and running a local program there, and I was able to meet with some of the service provider staff and talk about CAAMA & RIBS, what the possibilities are, and what our vision is for Aputula …I met up with Noelene Kenny, a past broadcaster, who is pretty busy these days, so is unable to do the shows, but is happy to support Jonathon & others doing something locally. Future visits are going to be closer together, starting up a Youth Program is in the pipeline & discussions are underway to get after-hours access to the studio for evening programs and weekend programs too … I am so looking Forward to my next visit to Aputula We did a local program 9:30 to 11:30 which was well received, and could be heard all around the community …shire workers, health clinic, people cars … it was great …so keep an ear out for 101.3FM at Aputula…Jonathon McCormack at the Panel …

and as a ps??? everyone was right, driving the Old Ghan Railway Heritage Track was a surreal experience, but dodging the spikes kept the concentration on the road too…fantastic country, fabulous views …several surprises!!!

RIBS Workshop in April ….

RIBS Workshop ……….with the opening of the new training facility on the 17th April at CAAMA Offices … RIBS broadcasters are leaping at the opportunity to be one of the first groups to utilise this important facility, designed to provide the opportunity and resources to individuals of all age groups to learn. The RIBS Workshop that is taking place at the end of this month is strengthening the impact of Aboriginal Language Broadcasters to the community both locally and regionally, it is improving the skill set of current expertise and introducing Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services as a platform for consistent development and growth to emerging broadcasters in community.

Getting More out of a Translation

Getting More out of a Translation ………….

RIBS Coordinators travel widely to support, develop andtrain broadcasters to give local rograms in local language. There are manylanguages used throughout the Territory, and this is the primary enjoyment our listeners receive when listening to the several language groups broadcasting on CAAMA Radio…

Languages currently used by RIBS broadcasters doing local community programs and networked CAAMA programs are Eastern Aranda, Western Aranda, Central Aranda, Jingili, Luritja, Warlpiri, Warumangu, Wakaya, Ptjantjatjara, Yankuntjutjara and many also speak a sort of pigeon language when translating song meanings or announcing community notices and sharing information.

2012 Schools Project – RIBS in the Communities

2012 saw the Innovative CAAMA RIBS Schools Project getting underway in Hermannsburg this February.  This program endeavours to introduce Radio to youth in schools with the longer term objective of bringing Local Youth Radio to individual Communities. It’s a great opportunity for youth to share their music, interests and style
with other community members … For further information on this project you can give the
RIBS Coordinator a ring during office hours, on (08) 8951 9768 or email r.toi@caama.com.au

RIBS Rocket & Roving Reporter in Alpurrurulam …

RIBS Rocket & Roving Reporter in Alpurrurulam …

Ted the RIBS Roving Reporter and I left Elliot early on the 15th to drive to Alpurrurulam,  nd luck was on our side at Tennant Creek, when we called into the Police Station for a road report the Austral Downs Road was open, so being able to go through the Barkly, down Austral Downs & just a few kilometres east on the Sandover Highway cut our recommended travel time by up to 5 hours, excellent from our point of view.  Ted & I were travelling with the Tobacco Education Officer for the Barkly Region, and so with company it was a much easier trip to undertake.

We arrived at Alpurrurulam at about 3:45 of the 15th, and spent about an hour with the SSM there Jeff Iversen, who introduced us to the town, explained who did what, and showed us the very impressive Community Centre they are putting together over there, including the Internet Café in the afternoon … this is where the RIBS Studio is and so I was able to get a good look at that and check the equipment for any faults.

I had a great talk with the senior teachers at the Alpurrurulam School about a Youth Radio program as well, so later in the year we’re going to really work on getting that up and running as well.

Alpurrurulam (20°58′S 137°55′E / 20.967°S 137.917°E / -20.967; 137.917), is also known as Lake Nash, is a small town located in the Northern Territory, Australia, 600 km east of Tennant Creek and 20 km from the NT-Queensland border. The 2006 Census counts 343 residents, with nearly 94% of them Aboriginal. The town is located at the end of the Sandover Highway, which floods each year during the wet season and cuts all road access to the community.

The Alpurrurulam town is of the Barkly Shire, and boasts the only school in the area, as well as an Australian Rules Football club.

Confusion exists as to whether the town is called Alpurrurulam or Lake Nash. Essentially the town is referred to as “Lake Nash” in everyday speaking and for mail delivery (via Mount Isa) and “Alpurrurulam” for all official matters, such as a census. Alpurrurulam was established in the early 1980s as a 1,000-acre (4.0 km2) excision from the 3-million-acre (12,000 km2) Lake Nash Station. The main language group in the area is Alyawarre.

I look forward to further visits to both Alpurrurulam and Lake Nash, especially as they now tell me there are small fish in the Lake. It’s all good news for CAAMA and Alpurrurulam RIBS Radio!!!!

RIBS Rocket-On The Road to Elliot …

RIBS Rocket-On The Road to Elliot …

The drive to Elliot was without incident on the 13th  February for the RIBS Rocket and Ted, The RIBS Roving Reporter… traffic was steady & driving quite safe. Elliot Studio is in the North Camp at Elliot … Gurungu Radio … and Jason is currently providing local broadcasts from 7:30 through to midday. I was able to present him with  the TCBL licences to place on the wall, and some new & fresh posters which brightens the place even more.

Jason is able to promote events in the community and visits by service  providers and he, like all RIBS Broadcasters, is available to help local members understand things that are happening by having interviews and discussions with visitors to their communities during the programs.

Broadcasting from such a remote region has its own particular issues, including musical content … its very expensive to go to the community store to buy cd’s yet there is no other choice, for both the broadcaster and other individuals, yet they do, and they pay a fairly hefty price for them, much greater than we do in the larger centres.

Jason is well supported by his family & the Community … Excellent stuff Jason, you’re doing a great job!!!

Roving RIBS Report

It has been  a big couple of weeks for RIBS getting
the RIBS Programs up & running after the break …  all Remote Radio Broadcasters and Stations have started up now. Keep an ear out for the Local Content program starting up throughout  the Region … also, the Pilot Schools Program starts shortly at Ntaria, and it’s exciting getting Youth Programs started locally ….  Anyone wanting further information about this just contact Robyn by email at  r.toi@caama.com.au

It’s been big travel again for the RIBS Rocket … twice to Ltyentye Apurte and Ntaria, with Areyonga thrown in for good measure to replace faulty equipment or return equipment …and next week is a big run up to Elliot, then across to Apurrurulum ..of course we all
want the flooding to just go away and make our driving lives a little easier …
but the ‘long way round’ seems to be the only course for this trip … The Rocket is
in getting a service as we speak!!! Ready for the road!!!

The Request lines for CAAMA RIBS Programs are Areyonga 08 8954 8039, Titjikala 08 8956 0844, Ntaria 08 8956 7838, Ltyentye Apurte 08 8956 0882 & Rum Jungle 08 8939 7109

As part of the RIBS Broadcasting Team I’d like to thank all our listeners for the great support our programs get and encourage everyone to listen in, phone in and keep on enjoying our shows …
