2012 Kunkga’s Career Conference at Yulara, N.T.

The 2012 Kunkga’s Career Conference was held at Yulara in the Northern Territory from the 27th – 29th March.

The Kungka Career Conference is an exciting gathering of  young Anangu and Yarnangu (Aborigina) women aged 12-20 years from the Central Australian desert communities of WA, NT and SA.

The conference aims to provide information on education and employment pathways, as well as developing leadership, life skills, health and wellbeing relevant to women in the remote cross-border region.

Over 80 young women  attended the conference, along with senior women from the communities, teachers, youth workers, along with youth and education organisations.

The NPY Women’s Council are hoping the conference will become an annual event.

The CAAMA crew headed down to Yulara.

Australia’s peak representative body for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders says it does not believe there has been enough support expressed from Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory for the Gillard Labor Government to proceed with continued punitive programs contained in the Stronger Futures Bill.

Human Rights advocate Amnesty International has slammed the Stronger Futures Legislation…calling on all senators to withdraw their support for the bills….which the group says will represent the Governments blatant disregard for its human rights obligations…and the continued dis empowerment of Aboriginal people in the Northern Territory…if passed.

A NSW Aboriginal leader says he believes that the Commonwealth government may have committed a major fraud following the first time inclusion of his people in the 1967 census, when a still valid British law stated Aboriginal natives should not be counted in any census.

A new 2 year plan in Alice Springs will help reduce water useage following the installation of a new irrigation systems in over 64 parks around the town.

Tributes are flowing for Former Melbourne Demons star and Brownlow medallist Jim Stynes who has died from cancer at the age of 45.

According to the Northern Territory Shadow Minister for Indigenous Policy, Adam Giles Aboriginal people who were meant to receive accredited training under the Gillard Labour Governments SIHIP Housing Program were only given menial tasks such as collecting rubbish and cleaning up.

South Australian, Aboriginal Affairs Minister….Paul Caica has failed to explain to parliament why he and communities Minister, Ian Hunter had avoided visiting an APY Lands community following a death in January.

Thursday, 15th March, 1962 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders won the right to vote in Australian federal elections.

For the First Time in Alice Springs candidates for Mayor in the upcoming town council elections have participated in a LIVE radio debate.

A court case decision which could  impact on the location of australia’s first nuclear waste dump at Muckatty near TennantCreek in the Northern Terrritory has not been made……but the Government has still protected Muckatty from being challenged as the nominated site according to the lawyer acting on behalf of local traditional owners opposed to the site being located on their land.

The weather bureau has cancelled its cyclone warning for parts of the western Top End in the Northern Territory and Western Australia but warns of the prospect of more torrential rain.

The Senate committe inquiry into the Stronger Futures consultation process in Northern Territory Aboriginal communities will be be tabled in federal Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.

A proposed expansion of a quarry in the Perth hills is continuiing to threaten a sacred site known as owl rock…..Local Greens Member want to protect sites.

The Bureau of Meteorology has declared a cyclone watch for parts of the Top End including Darwin and the Tiwi Islands.

The Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Jenny Macklin has moved to divert criticismn of the consultation process undertaken for the Gillard Labor governments proposed Stronger futures legislation saying she is confident it was was “thorough and fair”.

Central Australian AFL superstar Liam Jurrah  arrived back in Melbourne last Friday afternoon after being granted bail on charges linked to an attack on a man  on the outskirts of Alice Springs.

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser has again attacked the Gillard Labor governments consultation process with Aboriginal people about new laws to replace the Northern Territory Intervention.

Ian Viner  a former  Minister for Aborignal Affairs  is highly critical of the the Gillard Labor governments decision to vote on and pass the proposed Stronger Futures Bill through the House of Representatives…. before a Senate committee report on the consultation process has been presented to Parliament.

Aboriginal leaders in Western Australian have slammed a state governments offer of just $2000 per person as repayment for the “Stolen Wages ” a slap in the face and a cruel and heartless offer.

THE Northern Territory coroner has recommended further investigation into the death of a 34 year old Aboriginal man who took his own life in a prison cell just months after he was allegedly bashed by jail guards.

Leading Psychologist says not enough attention is being paid to hearing problems for Aboriginal people.

A health expert in the the field of dementia says that Aboriginal carers in remote communities are often stressed and overworked because of a lack of locals who have been suitably trained to help.

Kaytetye Mob Launches Language Dictionary at Neutral Junction.

This week has been very special for the mob out at Tara (Neutral Junction) in Central Australia, where the local community gathered for a very important event.

Kaytetye (pronounced Kay-ditch) is the language and name of the people whose traditional lands lie approximately 300 kilometers north of Alice Springs, N.T..

Work on the Dictionary officially began in 1996 when Robert Hoogenraad and Shirleen McLaughlin collected existing Kaytetye material and started work with Aunty Emily Hayes and Joannie Ross to transcribe and translate it.
